In other words, you were not an education major, but would like to use your degree to teach? Different states have different requirements. For specific details on obtaining your teaching certificate in your subject area, contact your state department of education.

Generally speaking, you will be required to take additional classes and pass your certification exams in your subject area. Depending on how desperate your area is for teachers, you might be hired before you do any of this with the understanding you must complete the courses/pass the tests within the year.

Some districts require you to pay/attend a local college/university for the educational classes you have to take. Others will offer them free of charge through their district offices.

Online instructors have to meet the same requirements as traditional classroom teachers. Online teachers are hired just like regular teachers.
