If someone is trying to learn/increase new skills for career advancement or trying to check off a block that's necessary for promotion, then a distance learning degree might be good. Since many public and private universities do not accept credit from many distance learning programs, if someone wants to transfer to another college for additional education, then it would be a waste of money. Another problem is that some jobs care about where you got your degree from while others do not. For example, getting an online PhD will probably not land you a professor job, but getting a degree in how to fix copy machines might be equivalent to getting a degree at a technical college.
