I am attending an out of state university for a BS degree in construction engineering technology through DISTANCE LEARNING, ONLINE. I have heard all the negative talk about distance learning degrees but this degree is from a legit school, University of Southern Mississippi. I can continue attending or enroll in my local university for construction management, which has a horrible schedule and working would be nearly impossible. Is it worth sacrificing everything to attend my local school or would I be better off with my distance learning? I also have a design and construction background to go with the degree. How would an employer in this field view my degree if online, even though I have a related background?

If it’s from a good university then don’t worry about it. On your physical degree, it’s not going to say “online degree,” it’s going to look like any other degree. The only way an employer will know if you got it online will be if you tell them. I’m getting my masters from a respected university and the university only offers it online, which sucks, because I actually like being on campus. Online can actually be much harder than attending on campus, and there will be some subjects that are heIIa hard to learn online, like some math classes, and I would fail if I tried to take a math class online, because I learn better in a classroom setting. I’m trying to switch majors and transfer to another university and the university I want to go to only offers the degree online, lol, but I looked at the staff credentials and I’ll have to say that I’ll be very proud to graduate from this university and learn under the tutelage of such outstanding professors who are professionals in their field.
This depends on what you want and what you can handle. The degree and work experience will definitely help you become a good contender for the job and get higher pay. You know your life better than the rest of us and you have to decide if it’s worth it or not. I know what I would do based on my own wants and goals, but mine are different than yours. The good thing about online classes is that you can work on your own time, even at 3am, if that’s the only time you have to complete school work.
Normally, an online degree has less credibility than an on-campus degree. Strong evidence of this is the extreme anxiety online students feel to make sure the online nature of their degree is not revealed. They live in constant fear of being outed.
In the case of your Construction Engineering Technology degree, it is TAC/ABET-accredted, which trumps consideration of online vs on-campus. You are studying a solid degree from a solid school. Fear not.
When you graduate, make sure you get NICET Certification.

From my experience you do not learn anywhere close to what you would learn in the classroom when you study online, I did it for a year. You miss lectures and most of what you learn comes from reading. But you also miss the very important interaction with your professors. So when you graduate you really do not have academic references, you are just a name on a screen to them. The visual and hands on experience is also lost in distance learning. Is there another school, or can you move to a different school? Having studies online and now being at a university, I would never in a million years go back. I think that maybe you should just try it, or go to your local school part time to see what the construction management program is like in person. Then you can me a comparison for yourself. But whatever you chose, good luck!
