First, make sure you know the application deadlines for the graduate schools you want to go to. It’s already too late for most law schools! Second, the school code sends the FAFSA info to the school, and then the school will send you an award letter which will tell you how much you can receive, if you have been accepted to the school. So, you need to apply ASAP, and put the school codes on the FAFSA. You probably won’t need to make a decision until February or so.

I’m assuming you are planning on starting school in the fall of 08.
Here is what you would need to do. Do your fafsa as soon after Jan 1 as possible using your 07 tax forms. (I’m assuming you are a us citizen or eligible non citizen). You can list up to 6 different schools on your fafsa. I’d advise you put all the schools you are considering on your fafsa. You do not have to have already applied to list them on your fafsa. Fafsa then sends your financial information to that’s schools fin aid office. However, they will not be able to issue you an “Award Letter” (a detailed letter listing the amount and kinds of financial aid you qualify for) without you applying and being accepted to the school.

You can apply to more than one school, lots of people do, it helps you compare your financial aid packages. A scholarship of 1,000 dollars is a bit different at a school with a total cost of 1,500.00 than from a school that costs 15,000.00 be sure you keep this in mind when looking at on line schools. Be sure to put real schools on your fafsa as well, distance education degrees look good, but only from a distance. :-)

If you are planning on starting school in the spring you need to get busy and do all this NOW!
Good Luck.
