We live in an age of instant information where access to knowledge is no longer tied to institutions. A person can go online and download almost any book available. While its true that many positions require structure and guidance outside of the text ( Medical doctors, engineers, ect), it seems like many people have degrees in fields they never really work in. Is College becoming an unnecessary job prerequisite for most positions given the availability of information?

No. College isn’t just about knowing a bunch of stuff you can find online. It’s about proving that you can jump through all the hoops to survive college (i.e. write a knowledgeable paper, comprehend upper level literature, process upper level math, are responsible enough to complete college, etc).
