So I’m interested in becoming a MA but I have a few concerns. I just finished my first year of college in May of this year. After that I decided to take a break and work for a while instead. A lot has happened since then; I got married the 3rd of June and I moved in with my husband. Our families in the meantime are helping us out with trying to find and apartment of our own. I just got a job at Wal-Mart and I’ve been working there for a few weeks now. In just these past few months I’ve realized a lot and I’ve made up in my mind to try and better myself by going back to school or try taking some classes so I can get a degree to become a MA and have a better job. I’m worried if I can deal with working and going back to school. I only work at wal-mart part time however.i think if i worked full-time it would’ve been more difficult for me to focus in school. i’m just worried because i don’t have the money to go back to school and i’m worried if i’ll even have the time.
i guess what i’m asking is, what can i do to manage my time so that i can be able to go back to school and become a MA? second, would it be better for me to take classes online or do them in class? i feel that having hands on experience is better for me. my grandmother in law tells me theres a place in town where she works that gives nursing classes but i’m not sure if those are the kind of classes i need to be taking to get started.i’m going to check it out though. can anybody give me any advice on what i should do? i just want to do this to help myself so that I can have a better career and help support me and my husband.

First, you need to research the pay scale for MAs in your area–you may be very surprised what they make. Next, you need to see how the job market is for MAs where you live–many, many MAs can not find jobs. Next, you need to find a community college that offers that program, not a for profit school which is ridiculously expensive. You need to go to a bricks & mortar school. Any online school for any care-giving medical field will guarantee you never get hired (except ADN to BSRN). You should actually look more into becoming a LPN-better pay and better career ladder. However, you will need the support of someone to do this-financially & with any child care issues. It is hard to work while in a full time program.
