I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in communications in May 2008. In all seriousness I was never able to get a paying job prior to that, but at the time when I started college I realized that people who graduated seemed to be getting good jobs, and there was no talk of trouble with them finding jobs, which is actually why I went to college to begin with. All during my time in college I was so desperately wanting to just get a job so I would have money, but I figured “just let me get through college, and FINALLY after 22 years I will have a JOB where I can get PAID money, then I’ll be able to save and take driver ed (which is required in Maryland and costs $325). But of COURSE, right around 2008 when I graduated is when the economy really went south and people actually DID seriously start talking about they couldn’t find jobs, whereas I thought I was just saying that before.
Now put yourselves in my shoes: I am now 24, and since I couldn’t get a job I still haven’t had the $325 to take driver education. So I have to fight with my dad to drive me places to apply for jobs, he gets pissed off because he says I am wasting his time because no one is really going to end up hiring me, and then in the end people really DON’T end up hiring me. I have had so many people when I called back say how they “wanted” to hire me, but just went with someone else instead. So what am I supposed to do? I need money to take driver education and pay bills. I am single and only live with my dad and 25 year old brother, and my dad only gets about $800 per month. We live in a mobile home where the lot fee is $495 and rent is $147, meaning a total of about $600 per month and only $147 is even going towards paying the home off. I can’t even meet any guys because I can’t get anywhere where my dad and brother are not around me and it’s hard to talk to guys. Since I have a degree in communications I have applied at every single newspaper place I know of in this small town. I have also tried McDonald’s, Burger King, several grocery stores, hotels, hospitals, doctor’s offices…the list goes on. I would be extremely lucky if I can get dad to take me anywhere else to apply for a job, but I just don’t even want to fight with him anymore! I don’t want to fight with him, and it’s SO stupid because I just NEED ANY job and then we wouldn’t fight like that. You know? And the only way I have internet access is at the library where computer time is limited, so it is just as difficult to apply online. WHAT CAN I DO?

This exact thing is happening to my fiance. He went to college graduated top of his class with a bachlores in computer science. That was 5 yrs ago! The problem that he keeps running into
is companies use a 3rd party to hire out the work and the 3rd party companies already have workers for them. Another issue is they want someone with 3-5 yrs experience and with so many canidates applying usually there is someone with years of experience. Try getting in at an entry level to start off you might be suprised at how quickly you get moved up. Also try companies that offer Online support. I hope this helps!
