For example, when I register for college courses online, their names end with a three-digit number. What does each digit indicate?
In general, numbers under 100 are not for credit towards a degree, 100-499 are for undergraduate classes (Bachelor’s or Associate’s degrees only) and 500-599 are graduate classes undergrads can take, and 600 above are for graduate students only.
They also indicate level and type. 101 is usually basic, introductory class. SPAN101 would be the spanish class where you learn the A,B,Cs. SPAN151 would be just a conversation class, and SPAN352 would be a literature course in Spanish.
BIO100 is basic biology for the general information, and BIO181 would be basic biology for those who want to major in it. BIO205 is Microbiology which gets more specific. Often, larger numbers mean that numbers below them are prerequisites as well.
