you can do anything you set your mind to! if you save up enough money, go for it! in the long run, it seems like you’ll be a lot happier and better off.

sure, why not? arizona might be cheaper than california. i know that scottsdale community college is near Arizona State University so maybe you could go there. you could probably find a roommate too because that area, Tempe, is a big college town.

It’s definitely possible. I don’t know about other states but in Virginia if you go to a community college for two years and maintain a B average you can basically walk into any Virginia college. There’s always opportunities to get your life back on board and I think you can do it if you’re happy and optimistic. Go for it :)

Of course you can pursue your dream of moving to California and graduating with a nursing degree. I think it’s very possible. However, you may have to change your attitude a little about your present situation. A depressed person is too mired in misery to achieve future goals. Try to put up with whatever is causing you so much distress, and look toward the future with your goal in mind. Knowing that your present life is just temporary, will make the waiting more tolerable. In the meantime, try to improve your grades and make some friends that you can count on. With your future in mind, that should inspire you to get motivated. Think of each day as getting that much closer to your dream. I know you can do it! Good luck!

Yes you can, but, you have to think about how you will support yourself while you go to the community college.

If you are very desperate to do something different, to go somewhere else, to start a new life, check out the Peace Corp.

They do great things all over the world, especially in third world countries. All you need to do is volunteer to be able to go work on behalf of them in an entirely new frontier, and definately create positive change for the world while you do so.

It’s possible but it will cost more. When you go to school “out of state” the cost at least doubles and sometimes even goes up more than double. This is because you aren’t a resident of that particular state. After a certain period of time you can become a resident but that varies from state to state.

I personally think that it is a good idea to start at a community college. For many reasons but here are the most important ones. It costs much less than a university so if you screw up or are not ready for college it won’t hurt (financially) as bad as a university would. Also there are much smaller classes so you are able to have more one on one time with professors. By the time you are ready to transfer to a university you will be ready rather than just coming straight out of High School.

Good luck!

It will all get better. Just try to have a positive attitude and positive things will come your way!

Of coarse you can! Let me tell you, you can do anything. I hated high school. I dropped out to get away. I moved out of my parents house because they were so depressing. I then went to a community college for 1 year and then transferred to a university. I now have a Masters degree and have been a teacher for 10 years and love my job! You can do whatever you want. Sometimes you need to get away from unhealthy environments to succeed. There are many places that are sunny and have great people with great nursing programs. Starting out at a community college is the way to go. You have great plans.

You can move anywhere you want. Just be aware you will be charged out of state tuition at any of those schools you move to…. and it won’t be reduced to instate after you have been there a year or two because you would be a current college student. If you have unlimited cash, then go for it.. if not… find a community college with a dorm in the state you are.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the state line for kids your age… the longer you live, the more you will realize it’s not always true.

I checked few links about SAC. It is possible. Anything is possible! However, you have to work hard to get there. Make a plan, and start studying harder now! No tomorrow, no next month. Now! From here, I see that you just need a little push to make it.

There is your motivation! Stick to your plan and be more positive for your own sake. I assume you suffered a lot, and I am really sorry for this. I hope your life will be better as of now.

I think that its possible. You need to try to focus more in school on obtaining a quality education, you won’t be 18 until next year, so what are you going to do until then? What do your parents say? A child that listens to their parent usually benefits, unless you have crappy parents! Please work hard a graduating from High School. Don’t let bad experience determine who you are, only use them to motivate you to a better person.

Yes,of course there is. But if you want to realize your dreams, you better concentrate to do well this year and get a good start. You know the saying? Your back bone must be as good as your wish bone.

There are some great ccs in California. The issue, as other posters have mentioned, is that if you move there and enroll in school right away, you’ll be charged out of state tuition rates. In order to be charged the lower, in-state tuition rates, each state requires you to have lived in that state for X period of time – and that amount of time varies by state. And you can’t be going to university or cc or trade school during that time. You have to live there for X time first, then apply to schools, in order to qualify as an in-state resident.

Check the residency requirements on the website for the cc you’re interested in. See how long CA requires you to live in that state before you qualify for the in-state tuition rates. Then decide what to do. You can certainly go to cc anyway, simply paying the higher rates – up to you. But just FYI.

And btw, like you, I used college as a way to get away from my house. It works. Even if you decide to go to college in your home state, to get the lower tuition rates, go to school as far from your house as possible. I went to the opposite end of my state.

But again, if you really want CA, and really want cc, go there anyway. Apply anyway. Pay the higher rate, and so be it. In the end, it’ll be worth it.

But if you can wait to establish residency, that can save you cash, both at the cc and at the uni where you get your bachelors.

That sounds like a plan to me. I am so excited for you.
I taught school, so I do know how very important it is to do your best in your studies. That is your job in life at your age, the only job that you have right now. Your grades are your promotion, as that is how others will judge you. You are not doing this for anyone else, regardless of what you think. You need to look at this as doing something for yourself. Right now, you are building the foundation to support the rest of your life. With a weak foundation, your life will be poor. Tomorrow is not too late to start again. I don’t care if it is the end of this school year. Don’t lose another day. Finish off this school year with a bang. Go talk to all of your teachers tomorrow and explain how you want to turn your life around. Teachers love to work with someone who tries. Trust me on this one. This is a secret that very few students ever learn. Teachers are human beings and usually very eager to help someone who is trying. A good student or one who tries is their reward. They is why they become teachers in the first place. It certainly is not for the money that they earn.
If your grades have fallen, you might want to check into summer school. Do not look upon it as a punishment, but rather a way for you to get a head start on next year. More and more students are turning to this., as it works.
You will need to have money saved for your trip. Do not even think about going without a bank account to tide you over while looking for a job. I would advise that you start looking into the local newspapers, job classified sections, out there for jobs, prior to your departure. You can write some letters on your own. Perhaps your parents or one of your teachers would proof your letter. If your grades are good, the people doing the hiring, should look on you more favorably. Don’t be afraid to put your best foot forward. You might want to try for a job at the junior college that you are interested in attending. Do be careful that you are dealing with reputable people.
Next year I want you to start off the year by immediately having a talk with all of your teachers. You will not believe what a difference that will make, but talking is not good enough. You must mean what you are saying and stick to it. The moment you have a problem, go in and talk with your teacher. Keep checking on your grades Stop by their classrooms after school. Ask for their help. If you have a bad test, see if there is any chance of doing extra work or taking the exam over again.
Now that you have a goal to be a nurse, you will need to go to your school counselor and schedule classes that will build up your background. There is an awful lot of science in a nursing career. It is a tough course.
A junior college is an excellent way to go to college, even if you do not go on, as you have said, for your four year degree. Who knows? If you do well enough in school, there maybe grants for you. If you do a good job, nothing is impossible. Junior colleges are usually less expensive and do not provide as many different activities, sports or parties that four year schools will offer. Remember you are not going to school for any of those reasons, because your focus is going to be on yourself and earning your degree, exactly where it should be.
You will need to check the requirements to get instate tuition in California. Most areas require that you be living and working in their state for one year. Then, your tuition is almost half. However, you could begin taking a few courses, just to start your degree, even at the higher costs. That shouldn’t be too much. You can really apply yourself, if you only have one or two courses, as you will be working at the same time.
When you are ready to really go full time, you will want to apply on fasfa.gov. This is your bridge to all the grants and financial assists out there. California has been known to be a good place for financial aid. It is best to apply on January the first, as that is the opening day for this process. The sooner you get your application in, the better your chances are to get the grants. First come, first served, does apply in this case, as they send your college your application, based on the order that you are in when you apply. Remember that they are not waiting for you, but servicing the applications that are ahead of yours. They pass the grants out in the order that they receive the applications. Your application will be sent to the college or colleges of your choice. Go over to your advisor and work with them the moment you are invited. Don’t disregard the smaller grants, as most people only want to shoot for the big ones. One of my daughter’s college professors told us that they had 30,000 in grants leftover, because the students did not apply for the smaller grants. That happens all the time. The moral of this story is to apply for all of them, hoping to get a whole lot of money. They need nurses, so your chances are really good.
Look, I don’t know what happened to you, but that is not important. From what you say, it sounds awful. You may have some problems that need some professional help. That is up to you and your parents, if you choose that route. There are organizations out there that may offer you some free help.
I will tell you that everyone, no matter who they are, has things happen that can ruin their lives. Just living through high school, dealing with those whispering halls of gossip, is enough. Don’t let this thing that happened destroy your life, because then you really are the victim. You are young and you have the rest of your life. You are your own pilot. and only you can map the course that you are going to take. Don’t waste your time worrying about yesterday, but start thinking about tomorrow, because you cannot do anything about yesterday. It is overwith, so leave it in your past.
Going to a warm, sunnyy climate may help your depression. There actually is an illness that people suffer from in the winter, when there is less sunlight. Studies are being run on this at the National Institute of Health. Maybe California will help you with your depression. I hope so.
I have learned that whenever I go to Florida in the winter, I wake up to sunshine, and feel good all over. The skies are blue. The birds are singing and the air is crisp. It energizes me.
At the same time, if there is anyway that your parents are able and willing to help you, talk to them. Believe me, the biggest lesson you have yet to learn in life is that a parent’s love is the greatest love that you will ever have. It is an unconditional love. It is a good thing that God, in his infinite wisdom, does not give parents a teenager. Instead, we are given babies and they are so adorable. We learn to love them and that helps to prepare us for the difficult years ahead of us. Once a parent has that strong bond, it can weather almost anything. We can forgive and still love our children, no matter what happens. Someday, although you may not think so now, you will remember this letter and know that I was right. If you are not getting along with your parents, just know that you are normal. It is all part of the growing up process. Everyone experiences it. Your parents know this too.
Always remember, if you do the very best that you can do, then you are a winner. You sound determined. I have very positive feelings that you will suceed, because you have got what it takes. Tomorrow is the new beginning of the rest of your life.
