Generally nursing is 2-3 year program to become an RN. 1 year of prelims, then 2 years of actual nursing school. Yes, you CAN go longer, up to a PHD if you like. But to become certified and start to work, it’s 2 years.

I’d stick with nursing… I should have. Business will fluctuate – economy up, economy down. However, people will never stop getting sick. An RN with a business background has a long career of nursing management.

Perhaps you should consider majoring in healthcare administration. If you are good, it’s possible to advance all the way up to president at a hospital. If I’m not mistaken, this requires at least a master’s degree.

Nursing school is extremely rigorous and time-consuming. Schools make their programs tough (admission and throughout the program) to ensure only the very best candidates will make it through their program to take the NCLEX. In the programs in my area, numbers of students accepted through graduation is roughly cut by 50% from beginning to end.

Honestly, I wouldn’t go for a business degree. To me, it’s kind of like a psychology degree. no offense. At least with nursing, you can become an extern after your first official semester of nursing classes (actual nursing classes; not pre-reqs) making way more than minimum wage. Plus, another upside is the fact that the hospitals that hire externs use this as a recruitment tool. (Basically, if you are offered position as an extern..you will probably be offered a job there as a new grad RN.)
That can offer you some job security!!! And, it’s great experience for clinicals!

Looking at the current job scenario and career projections, nothing can be as profitable as a nursing degree. However, it is a known fact that a business administration degree will prepare you for a wide range of careers. You can always advance your nursing degree with graduate degrees in nursing administration, nursing education and the like. These degrees would broaden your career horizons significantly. Both nursing and a business degree have their own merits and limitations. Therefore, you must choose a degree which prepares you for a career of your choice.
