Getting a degree online can mean many things. For example, a place like ITT Tech has online programs but a degree from there is basically worthless because they aren’t accredited by a “normal” accreditation board. They are “accredited” by a made-up board (I don’t know why the US allows this) but that’s why on their TV commercials you’ll see “Credits earned are unlikely to transfer”.

A place like University of Phoenix is truly accredited but there is a negative stigma about getting a degree from there. I would avoid it if I were you.

The third kind is an online degree or certificate from a regular institution like University of Montana or something. Most traditional colleges will offer some programs online and your degree will be from that university just the same as if you moved there for 4 years.

Good luck.

this semester i am taking all online classes… i love taking online classes they are fun, but you have to study sincerely.. the coming summer semester i am also gonna take all online classes. Online classes give you a freedom to work on your own pace. I am not sure about getting a online diploma though. I do not want to give a wrong advice… you should ask an expert about the diploma thing… as far as taking online classes is concerned i would say go ahead and enroll for some classes and you will have fun…..

I have taken only one online course from an accredited state university.
Degrees from online courses are not worthless. I would suggest trying to take a class online from a university rather than a school that specializes in online courses (for example instead of going to something like DeVry University try to take online classes from Arizona State University (just using Arizona as an example) or your local community college. Many universities have degree programs that you can complete completely online. Once you finish the course your degree will look like the exact same thing as someone who took all on-campus courses (e.g. if you took all online classes from ASU your degree would say Arizona State University…there wouldn’t be anything on the degree that says you took online courses).

Sorry that my answer is so confusing. I’m a little scatter-brained this morning.

Stephen T.’s answer is perfect. You just have to go to different accredited college/university websites and read about the online programs they offer. Once you graduate, your degree will say “University of Montana”(for example), not “Online University of Montana”; so, no one will have to know you did an online program. However, if you were to do University of Phoenix, everybody already knows that is an online school. I don’t think there is any shame in going to an online school, but you have to consider what future employers are looking for.
