You realize how much these ‘older people’ got paid when they were working?
My mom’s first job paid her 65cents an hour back in 1970. While things have improved, our cost of living is much higher now.

because when they were young adults, they earned a dollar an hour, give or take. my mother is almost 86 and made $.75 an hour working at a dime store. they dreamed of making $10 an hour. remember, there was a depression back then and no one made much money.

those older people would have like to earn 10$ per hour back in their day. they were probably getting paid 5 or 6 an hour

Older people are usually retired, so any form of income seems like good pay to them. Also, senior citizens grew up in a time where you could buy a cup of coffee for 10 cents and gas was under 50 cents. Their perception of money is probably (maybe the don’t possess a full understanding of inflation?). On the flip side, with the current economy and the high rates of unemployment, they could simply be being realistic in that getting any kind of a job (high income or low income) is a difficult task nowadays.

The federal minimum wage is $5.85 per hour, so depending on the job (i.e. checking people out at Target vs. Doctor) that could be very good pay or, like you think, very low.

I would like to make $10.00 an hour now..I lost my job last year and had to take a lower paying job just to have something coming in so we can eat……sometimes we have to be thankful for what we have…I was unemployed for 6 months…try that and raising children to boot. Have a nice day!

stupidest question on Yahoo! Answers. Think, man, these people worked in the old days when the standards of living were low. You better be happy with the money you’re making, some people are unemployed. Be happy with what you got.

First of all–and trust me on this–75 yo + aren’t the right people to ask–they don’t have their fingers on the pulse of what current wages are, and they aren’t really interested in finding out. My kid’s Grandpa would be more likely to shake his finger and say “You should….” whatever the issue is. Heck, last time I visited my father, the issues were “Your jeans are too baggy,” and “Your skirt is too LONG. Get that? Not too short, too LONG! In other words, MOM never wore skirts that long when she was alive, so how DARE I?

But here’s my (actually, it’s my daughter’s) story:

My youngest daughter age 23, has a BA from a good CA college (graphic arts and advertising majors). After getting her BA degree she moved to Brooklyn, where she’s sharing a small (they’re all small) 3 BR apartment with 3 friends. I believe her rent share is $775/month. Cute apartment, but definitely NOT a ritzy neighborhood. She landed a job Manhattan about 7 months ago, no longer owns a car (she sold her car in San Jose, it’d be a nuisance in NYC). She’s making $12.00/hour now in Manhattan and uses public transportation [NYC has a good subway/train system compared to the rest of the US].

CAN MY YOUNGEST DAUGHTER MAKE ENDS MEET? NO. Us parents still subsidize her living expenses $1000 a month.

And Lauren is not a wasteful spender, either (since she still depends on us, I have access to her checking account info. so I can transfer her money, so I know this for a fact) , EXCEPT that she’s taken time off from work to fly out to see her CA boyfriend 2x now, although the boyfriend pays for the airfare.
That, AND she does the ‘Starbucks Thing,’ which I don’t understand why you younger kids do ($4.00 for coffee? 2x/week? That’s $36/month! WHY do you kids DO it??)

…but to be fair, she’s also paying for an $8,000 online course she’s taking for graphic arts, so figure that into her costs…

ANYWAY, it’s been on the news a lot that ADULT CHILDREN STILL need parental support financially (i believe CNN said until age 27? Not sure) OR live at home longer because, quite simply, times have changed.

SO DON’T FEEL BAD. If my college grad daughter is only making $12.00/hr. in Manhattan, then wherever you live, $10.00/hr is not a bad starting-off salary.

Just don’t ask the 75+ folk if they think $10.00 is a good wage–ask your peers.

What is wrong with some Americans? $10.00 an hour and you have a degree? My husband is foreign born and came to the US 10 yrs ago. He never graduated from college but he has a trade he is a mechanic for Jaguar, Aston Martin, and Land Rover dealership, makes over $30 dollars an hour + bonus and receives great union benefits for our family. I never finished high school, but passed my GED and went through a vocational program for dental hygiene and make about $375-$400 a day! My uncle is also foreign born and a retired long shoreman who is well off right now and he didn’t even graduate high school. It’s called hard work, man, that’s what success in America is all about. My kids will be attending college, but I am teaching them about work ethic as well, because w/o work ethic education is nothing.
